Having an awesome cover letter can be absolutely
critical to your success in search for a job. The average American's
jobhunt can statistically last up to nine months, which now makes it
more essential than ever that you impress would-be employers and gain
an edge over the competition. The perfect cover letter can do wonders
towards achieving that goal.
When potential employers are poring
over a library's worth of applications in search of just one person for
the job, the cover letter is your primary means of attack. It's the
first look they're going to get at you, and it's your first opportunity
to look better than the rest of the applicants.
Getting through
this first challenge is essential to getting the position. This first
culling can determine right now if you have a shot at the job you're
after. Resumes with a great cover letter will go to the next round,
while the applications with weak cover letters (or worse--none at all!)
will be filed in the trash can.
Now, chances are good you didn't
somehow find the time to go to college for four years to get a degree
in Cover Letter Writing, so you might feel at a slight disadvantage.
The good news is that you don't have to be an expert in the field to do
well. All you need is a teacher.
One of the best teachers out
there is the tried-and-true example. It's always been wise to learn how
to do something important by getting in touch with people who have
either done it successfully or have risen above to become "masters" of
whatever skill you're trying to learn. However, finding these "experts"
isn't always easy, which can make the process rather difficult.
Luckily,
the "expert" you're going to be looking for in this field isn't a
person, it's the cover letter itself! It just isn't necessary to go
hunting for the person who's written successful cover letters...instead
go hunting for the cover letters themselves! They're a lot easier to
find, and frankly they can tell you more than any person ever could.
It's
an important skill, being able to analyze something and come up with
how to best adapt the inherent principles to fit your needs. A lot of
people get too lazy and fail at it by simply plagiarizing, which by no
means do I suggest or condone...taking the time to really figure out
what makes a great cover letter so great will not only allow you to
make your own great cover letters, but it'll also build the analysis
skill and make you even more valuable to potential employers!
Always
remember that your cover letter needs to do two things in particular:
present your personal qualification information, and get you set up for
an interview. And while the first one is important, the true purpose of
the cover letter is always to raise your chances of getting that
interview. You get the interview, and it's up to you to impress the
employer...but without a great cover letter, you could never even get
that far.
