Resume Writing Tips For Newbies
The resume is a one page document intended to peak the interest of the hiring manager who must fill a position in the company. Remember, this is only written to get the job interview. It obviously does not guarantee a position, so put your best foot forward. Resume writing for newbies is the same as that for the worker with many years experience, the only difference being in the work experience area. For the recent graduate, there just isn't the volumResume Writing For Newbiese of companies or jobs to list on the resume. However, as a substitute for experience, many companies are looking for education or certifications -- especially in this technological era.
For the newbie, having a resume can make a statement about how good he/she is able to communicate. After creating the header with correct contact information (double check this, it is absolutely critical), the next section should include education with all colleges attended and degrees awarded. It is also a good place to put awards and certifications (especially for the computer professional). Follow this up with the experience portion, most likely you will enter college classes and any internships that were attained in school. End up with any academic awards and list samples of important documents that were created (maybe a published senior thesis) while gaining that degree.
Finally, double check everything. While the built in spell-checker in the word processing program is fine to check spelling, it does not check for improper grammar and the wrong form of the word you intended to use.
Ask a friend or mentor to look it over with a critical eye. This will ensure a more professional appearing resume -- one that won't simply get laughed at before getting thrown out. Good luck!
